Developing a measurement tool for transit and public space improvements which draws upon readily available, open source data would go a long way toward helping cities not only justify their public realm investments, but also potentially reduce costs currently allocated for data collection and analysis. We are now currently conducting a two-phased project on behalf of Bloomberg Associates to explore the creation of such a tool that would be easy to use, replicable, and help accurately measure public realm investment performance for municipalities across the United States.

Recognizing that economic development strategies for municipalities are not one size fits all, there remains an opportunity to help facilitate public realm investments across the board by developing the tools that cities need to make wise decisions about where to allocate resources. As yet, municipalities have no standard set of metrics on which to base decisions and subsequently to track outcomes for these investments.
